#2: STRIP OFF

The other day I was watching the movie “Revolutionary Road” (I recommend watching the movie or reading the novel) and I could easily relate to the story of April and Frank on different fronts. The more I have talked about this movie with others, I can feel the pain in their voices and seems like our personal stories might me very different but in some way or the other we can relate to the story of April and Frank.

A simple question to my clients often leads to the revolutionary road – Are you happy living the cookie cutter lifestyle? The answer I get is “Hell No” – but I grew up thinking that's the way I have to live. I just want to fit in. I don't know what it is but I just have to keep up with the Joneses….

The simple answer we all need to ask our self is - Who has set those boundaries for us? What happened to our individuality? Why did we cave in to the will of others and lost track of our true passion?

The sad part is that we have accumulated so much baggage in our life span that it is actually stopping us from moving forward. I know it can be scary venturing into unchartered territory but if you have faith in yourself and a game plan you can take that big step.

Before you try to even answer what you really want to do in life, you first need to do the "Strip Off" ritual. Strip Off is a ritual I came up with few years ago and it has worked wonders for my clients. It is not exactly a strip tease but the concept is similar. You are going to get rid of all the things in your life that is stopping you from flying. The outcome of this ritual is basically a blank canvas on which you are going to draw your new life journey that follows your passions and dreams.

There is no magic pill and you have to do the Step #1 before you can move forward.

Step #1: The Strip Off Ritual

Just imagine that you are wearing a 500 pound of steel armor and you have to walk 10 steps. Unless you have super natural powers or you are a body builder, you might not even be able to take one step forward. The only way you can not only walk but sprint those 10 steps in a whizz is to strip off everything. Our life is in similar quandrums and the only way is for you to let go off all the materialistic, emotional and negativity in our life.

The warm weather is always a great inspiration to get organized, de-clutter and strip off the physical and emotional baggage. I have been following this ritual each year in June because it helps me stay focused, organized and breathes new life into my dreams. The first time is always tough for emotional reasons. But once you have get rid of all the clutter in your life, you can see things so clearly for the first time in your life. This is the time for you to celebrate and in fact, the perfect time to let some sunshine in your life.

Here is a simple assignment to for you:

•  Write down all the physical things that you are tolerating in your life. (for e.g., unpaid bills, unorganized closet, letters and pictures from your past relationships, broken fixtures, ...)

•  Write down all the emotional issues that you are tolerating in your life. (for e.g., debt, in abusive relationship, family pressures, ... )

•  Action Plan: Go through the list of issues, priortize them and then try to get rid of them

•  Ask for help - either a mentor, friend or hire a lifestyle coach. Your chance of success is much higher when there is someone there to boost your morale along the way. If you have watched “Sex and the City”, you would know what I am talking about.
